Gruff is an established sports medicine practitioner with extensive experience in high-performance sport. Having built his career as a Physiotherapist in rugby Union, Gruff has held several leadership roles including Head of Rehabilitation at Cardiff Blues, Lead Physiotherapist at Wales Sevens, Head Physiotherapist at England Sevens and Head of Medical Services at Ealing Trailfinders. Since his transition into football in 2023, he has now moved into the broader Performance space, taking up the role as the Head of Academy Performance at Brentford Football Club. This engaging role requires him to oversee the club’s medical, sports science, nutrition and human development teams. Adopting the club’s caring and progressive vision, Gruff co-ordinates the department’s strategic direction as they set their sights on category 1 next season. Working closely with the Club’s Head of Research and Development, Gruff collaborates with several of the club’s PHD students contributing to the club’s successful and progressive research centre. As an ambitious leader, he is currently undertaking a MBA to better his understanding of what it takes to lead successful high-performance programmes.
