Cookie policy

What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to remember your preferences and activity across page loads and visits. Some cookies are essential for the site to work; others help us improve your experience or show you relevant content and advertising.
How we use cookies
We group the cookies we use into three categories. When you first visit Sportsmith you are shown a consent banner that lets you choose which categories to accept. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link.
Your choice is stored in a cookie on your device (sm_consent). If you are logged in to a Sportsmith account, we also store an auditable record of your consent against your account so your preference follows you across devices.
Categories of cookies we use
1. Strictly necessary
These cookies are required for the site to function and cannot be switched off. They do not store any personally identifiable information.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
sm_consent | Sportsmith | Stores your cookie consent preferences and the policy version under which consent was given. | 1 year |
wordpress_*, wordpress_logged_in_* | WordPress | Keeps you securely logged in to your Sportsmith account and maintains your authentication session. | Session / 14 days |
wp-settings-* | WordPress | Stores UI preferences for logged-in users. | 1 year |
PHPSESSID | Server | Standard PHP session identifier used to maintain state across page requests. | Session |
mepr_* | MemberPress | Manages your membership access rights and subscription session. | Session |
2. Analytics
These cookies help us understand how visitors interact with the site — which content is popular, where people drop off, and how features are used. This helps us improve the experience for everyone. They are only set if you opt in.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics | Tracks site usage — page views, session length, traffic sources — to help us understand how the site is used. | 2 years |
mp_* | Mixpanel | Tracks user behaviour and feature usage in detail (e.g. which exercises or resources are viewed) so we can improve content and functionality. | 1 year |
3. Marketing
These cookies are used to measure the effectiveness of our advertising and to help us reach people who may be interested in Sportsmith on other platforms. They are only set if you opt in.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_fbp, _fbc | Meta (Facebook / Instagram) | Meta Pixel — measures the effectiveness of our advertising on Facebook and Instagram, and allows us to build audiences for ad targeting. | 90 days |
Third-party services
Some cookies are set by third-party services we use. Those providers have their own privacy policies describing how they use the data they collect:
We also use Mailchimp to send emails. Mailchimp is a server-side service and does not set cookies on your device, but it does store your email address and communication preferences. If you gave marketing consent, we also record the policy version under which you consented. See the Mailchimp Privacy Policy for details.
Managing your preferences
You can change your cookie choices at any time by clicking Cookie settings. You can also control cookies through your browser settings — most browsers let you block or delete cookies. Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies will prevent parts of the site from working correctly.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy whenever we add or remove tracking technologies or when the law requires it. When we make a material change we bump our policy version number — if you have previously consented, you will be shown the consent banner again so you can review the updated choices.
