Presentation description
Session RPE is one of the simplest monitoring tools in high-performance sport, but only when it is collected and interpreted correctly. Shaun’s presentation explores the science underpinning perceived exertion, why response bias undermines data quality, and how practitioners can implement evidence-based processes that transform RPE into a reliable tool for monitoring internal training load and informing performance decisions.
Learning objectives
- Understand the neurophysiological basis of perceived exertion and its role in monitoring internal training load.
- Evaluate the factors that introduce response bias and reduce the quality of session RPE data.
- Apply evidence-based strategies to improve athlete education, data collection, and decision-making using session RPE.
About the presentation
Shaun is a physical performance coach and scientist currently working at Newcastle Falcons, UK. He is an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCC) with the UKSCA; an accredited Sport and Exercises Scientist with BASES, and; a Charted Scientist with the World Science Council (CSci). Shaun is also a visiting research fellow with the Institute of Sport at Manchester Metropolitan University.
His main areas of research and practice are the programming, monitoring and evaluation of strategies to improve sports performance. Shaun is particularly interested in quantifying the training process and the application of subjective measures to athlete monitoring; having completed a PhD in this area at Teesside University.
