What moves the needle in rehab?

Presentation description

What do Ryan Grubbs and the team at the Houston Texans do to improve their rehab practice and get their athletes back as quickly and safely as possible? In this Sportsmith Premium presentation, Ryan unveils their cutting-edge 4-layer rehab framework, guiding athletes from the first stages of recovery to peak performance. From rewiring the CNS to addressing energy leaks, refining movement patterns, and monitoring rehab loads, this process is designed to build stronger, more resilient athletes.

Ryan explores the importance of periodizing variables like rate and force, targeting soft tissue capacity, and reverse-engineering the demands of worst-case scenarios. The Texans’ approach seamlessly blends science and practice, creating a system that maximizes efficiency and ensures every stage of rehab translates to on-field performance.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the four-layer rehabilitation framework (CNS, energy leaks, movement patterns, load monitoring) that underpins elite return-to-play strategies.
  • Apply principles of periodizing rate and force, and identify key “energy leaks” or inefficiencies that can derail rehab progress.
  • Translate worst-case scenario demands into reverse-engineered rehab targets to ensure carryover into sport performance.

About the presenter

Ryan has been involved in strength and conditioning and rehabilitation for the past 15 years. He has held positions at multiple universities including Ole Miss, Purdue, Liberty, and Louisiana Tech. He currently holds the position of Director of Reconditioning Return to Football with the Houston Texans.
