What do we really know about speed in team sports?

Presentation description

What do we really know about speed in team sports? Is it all about getting from point “A” to point “B” as fast as possible? Is it about how quickly one can execute sport skills? Is it about underlying kinetic capabilities, such as the interplay between various forces? Does technique matter at all? How might we be able to improve speed-based performance in the context of game play?

In this presentation, Strength & Conditioning Coach for football at Auburn University, Cam Josse does he best to answer these questions using research and his experience working across high school and collegiate sports as well as with professional athletes in the NFL, NHL, UFC, and WWE.

Learning objectives

  • Differentiate between isolated sprint qualities and “game speed” demands unique to team sports.
  • Understand the constraints and transfer mechanisms that mediate how linear speed translates (or fails to translate) to match performance.
  • Design evidence-informed speed training interventions that balance specificity with adaptability to sport context.
