Using speed based training principles to help develop resilient soccer players in the EPL

Presentation description

In this presentation, Tom will explain how he has adapted his approach in recent years to apply speed training principles into his athletic development programme. He will look at how his work doesn’t aim to make soccer players move like sprinters, but instead how the fundamentals of speed training can be implemented into weekly routines for both healthy and injured players whilst keeping the sport and game model at the centre of all decisions.

Learning objectives

  • Explain how speed-based training principles (e.g. velocity zones, force–velocity interplay, maintenance loading) apply specifically to soccer demands.
  • Design resilient speed microcycles that guard against decay under fatigue, injury risk, and season stressors.
  • Integrate speed work with technical, tactical, and recovery demands to maintain sprint sharpness in congested match calendars.

About the presenter

Tom Taylor is the Lead Physical Performance Coach at Chelsea Football Club, where he directs the design and delivery of high-performance training programming for the first team. His role, which commenced in early 2025, centers on developing physical resilience, efficient training load management, and rapid recovery protocols.
