Presentation description
ACL injuries are one of the most burdensome injuries an athlete can suffer. We even just have to look at the newspapers and everyday it seems that an elite athlete in one of our most prestigious leagues is being cast down for 9 months. So what can we do about it? What can we do as coaches to mitigate that risk?
Tom Dos’Santos presents for on those exact strategies. What can we do, using a multidirectional framework, to mitigate the risks whether it be in the weightroom or on the field/court? In this presentation, Tom describes the ACL injury mechanism and risk factors before identifying the biomechanical and technical determinants of ACL loading, specifically during cutting. He then moves onto applying technical models and coaching guidelines for fast and safer changes of direction. Finally, he takes us through the creation of an evidence-based multi-component programme for ACL injury mitigation.
Learning objectives
- Understand the concept of a multidirectional framework for ACL prevention by recognizing how loading in varying planes (sagittal, frontal, transverse) influences knee stability and injury risk.
- Apply structured training pillars to reduce ACL risk, learning how progressive phases—from preparation and activation to mechanics, resistance, and integration—target neuromuscular control across multidirectional tasks.
- Integrate screening and individualized programming: Use movement quality assessments (e.g., single-leg squat) to identify deficits and tailor interventions that improve knee alignment and load tolerance.
About the presenter
Dr Tom Dos Santos is a Senior Lecturer in Strength and Conditioning and Sports Biomechanics at Manchester Metropolitan University, with a strong research focus on ACL injury risk, change-of-direction biomechanics, and athlete profiling. He has developed and validated practical screening tools and interventions—such as the Cutting Movement Assessment Score (CMAS)—to identify high-risk movement patterns and guide individualized injury mitigation strategies
