The role of jump tests to evaluate readiness for return to play

Presentation description

In this presentation, Roula Kotsifaki breaks down how jump testing can go far beyond hop distance to deliver meaningful insights into athlete readiness. Blending clinical expertise with applied sports science, she explores which jump tests matter, what metrics to track, and how to interpret them to guide rehabilitation and return-to-performance decisions. From vertical and horizontal hop profiles to rate of force development, landing strategies, and limb symmetry indices, Roula explains how to extract the full value of jump data across the rehab timeline. Whether you’re working with ACL injuries, integrating force plate testing, or looking to individualize RTP protocols, this session equips you with the practical tools and deeper understanding to keep athletes progressing safely and effectively.

Learning objectives

  • Recognize the broader value of jump testing in rehab beyond simple hop distance by understanding how jump tests can offer deeper insights into neuromuscular readiness, motor control, and functional deficits.
  • Learn to use jump assessments to detect lingering issues in strength, function, or motor control particularly following catastrophic injuries like ACL ruptures.
  • Interpret jump test outcomes to decide when athletes are ready to advance through rehab stages and reduce risk during return-to-play protocols.

About the presenter

Dr. Roula Kotsifaki is the Head of the Assessment Lab in the Department of Rehabilitation at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha. She holds a MSc in Motion Analysis from the University of Dundee and a PhD in Computer Modeling from KU Leuven, where she focused on the biomechanical profiles of athletes post-ACL reconstruction at return to sport. Her expertise lies in advancing musculoskeletal screening and jump-based evaluation protocols to support athlete rehabilitation.
