Sprint technique assessment for hamstring injury risk

Johan Lahti

In this Sportsmith Premium presentation, Johan Lahti tackles one of the most pressing issues in sprint-based sports: the role of sprint technique and fatigue in hamstring injury risk. Drawing from the latest research and real-world data, Johan explores how mechanical strain on the hamstrings changes under fatigue, and whether our current assessment and screening protocols are missing critical risk indicators.

He breaks down the biomechanics of sprinting, zooming in on key phases like late swing and stance, and highlights how fatigue may alter movement strategies in ways that increase injury risk. With a mix of up-to-date literature, practical examples, and a large-cohort case study, this presentation bridges the gap between lab findings and applied sport settings.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how sprint mechanics and fatigue contribute to changes in movement strategies, elevating mechanical strain on the hamstrings and increasing injury risk.
  • Identify biomechanical risk indicators in sprinting and evaluate whether current screening tools are effectively capturing these risk factors.
  • Learn to interpret case-study data and recent research findings and apply that knowledge to improve assessment protocols in applied sports settings.

About the presenter

Dr Johan Lahti is a strength & conditioning coach (CSCS) based at R5 Athletics & Health in Helsinki, Finland, and is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Côte d’Azur, where he investigates multifactorial approaches to reducing hamstring injury risk in professional soccer. He draws on both cutting-edge research and practical, on-field data to explore how sprint mechanics—especially under fatigue—affect hamstring strain risk
