Speed: What matters and why?

Presentation description

There is so much information out there on speed training. Magic drills, new thinking (which is often old thinking) and outlandish claims litter social media. But what’s really important when we are developing speed?

In this session, Stuart McMillan (ALTIS) distils over 25 years of elite-level experience to reveal the core principles of speed development, exploring what truly matters vs. hype. By translating methods from track & field into team sport environments, he deconstructs myths and demonstrates how to manipulate speed variables using real athlete case studies and evidence-based insights.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the fundamental biomechanical, neuromuscular, and kinetic constraints that govern human speed.
  • Learn how to adapt and manipulate speed-development variables (e.g. force-velocity, constraint modification) for different athlete contexts.
  • Critically evaluate popular “speed drills” and discerning when (or if) they meaningfully contribute to performance.

About the presenter

Stuart McMillan is a senior coach and researcher at ALTIS, with over 25 years of experience working with world-class sprinters and team sport athletes alike. His work bridges the gap between high performance track & field and applied strength & conditioning in field sports, using empirical insights to challenge conventional wisdom.
