Presentation description
A practitioner’s account of how the rapid arrival of digital childhood has hollowed out the spontaneous play once embedded in society and school, and what professional academies must therefore deliberately rebuild inside their own environments. Drawing on his work at Chelsea’s academy, Jack defines the current context of youth development, presents an internal “pulse check” of how 60 players experience the environment, and shares two concrete responses: a strengths-based, player-led individual development planning process and Saturday multi-sport hubs in players’ local communities.
Learning objectives
- Articulate how the shift from embodied to disembodied childhood has reshaped the environment elite academies must develop young players within.
- Apply player-led storytelling and continuum-based questioning to assess an internal training environment across autonomy, feedback, reward and engagement.
- Design strengths-based individual development plans and complementary multi-sport exposure that rebuild what the external environment no longer supplies.
