Managing an insidious onset OCD with an elite level trampoline gymnast in the build up to the Paris Olympic Games

Presentation description

In this compelling case study, Ben Young details the intricate management of an elite trampoline gymnast diagnosed with an insidious onset osteochondral defect (OCD) in the lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Faced with the unique demands of trampoline gymnastics—where ground reaction forces reach up to 16 times bodyweight—Young outlines a multifaceted rehabilitation strategy that balanced performance maintenance with tissue healing. The presentation highlights biomechanical analyses identifying compensatory loading patterns linked to historical ankle injury, informing individualized programming to restore optimal joint function. Through phased foot and ankle interventions, platelet-rich plasma injections, and progressive closed-chain loading, Ben showcases a collaborative, data-driven approach involving a multidisciplinary team across UKSI and British Gymnastics. Despite setbacks, including a fall late in the preparation phase, the case reflects elite-level decision-making under Olympic pressures, blending clinical reasoning with performance priorities to protect the athlete’s knee while maximizing her competitive trajectory.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how high-impact sports like trampoline gymnastics challenge tissue recovery.
  • Identify the value of biomechanical assessment in uncovering compensatory loading.
  • Apply a phased, multidisciplinary recovery strategy combining clinical and performance interventions.
