Key mechanical and programming issues in sprint-focussed return to play processes

Presentation description

This presentation focuses on a variety of sprint-based assessment and rehabilitation protocols used in the return-to-play process for athletes from a variety of sporting backgrounds. While the main emphasis for this process is based on a sprint-focused approach, we will also identify other opportunities and methods for optimizing the return-to-play process and sustain improvement. We will review various applications for sprint drills on both the assessment and exercise prescription side, using a variety of technologies to document athlete status and progress.

The basis of the approach was developed initially for hamstring focused RTP cases, but has shown to be very effective in other soft-tissue and joint related injury management cases. We will provide a number of case studies throughout the session to support the efficacy of the approach.

Learning objectives

  • Diagnose common mechanical breakdowns (e.g. asymmetries, compensation, constraint violations) during sprint reintroduction.
  • Structure a phased programming roadmap that balances load, intensity, and recovery in a return-to-sprint context.
  • Integrate real-time feedback and monitoring to make evidence-based adjustments in return-to-play sprint protocols.
