Presentation description
Objective internal load monitoring is transforming how practitioners prescribe training, monitor readiness, and develop physiological capacity. This presentation explores how heart rate-derived metrics such as iTRIMP can be used to quantify biological stress, individualise conditioning, optimise rehabilitation, and make better-informed performance decisions across the entire training process.
Learning objectives
- Interpret objective internal load metrics to quantify physiological stress and training adaptations.
- Apply heart rate-based monitoring to individualise conditioning, recovery, and rehabilitation strategies.
- Evaluate how integrating internal and external load data improves decision-making in high-performance sport.
About the presenter
Dr Shane Malone is an applied sports scientist, strength and conditioning coach, and academic with over a decade of experience working across elite team sports and high-performance environments. He holds a PhD in Human Physiology from Liverpool John Moores University, where his research focused on training load analysis in Gaelic football. Shane has authored more than 85 peer-reviewed publications spanning game running performance, training methodologies, periodisation, injury prevention, and internal and external training load monitoring. He previously served as Head of Sports Science with Dublin GAA, where he led the monitoring and development of player performance within an elite Gaelic football environment. In this role, he integrated data-driven decision-making into training design, recovery strategies, and return-to-play protocols, supporting a multidisciplinary approach to athletic preparation and wellbeing. Before this, he worked as a National Sports Scientist with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), contributing to these rugby performance programmes through GPS data management and the development of national standards for sports science practice. Alongside his applied work, Dr Malone is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Science and Health at Technological University Dublin, where he contributes to teaching, curriculum development, and postgraduate supervision. Shane aims to combine his deep academic expertise with extensive practical experience, specialising in training prescription, athlete monitoring systems, data visualisation, and performance optimisation. His holistic, evidence-based approach has established him as a trusted practitioner across rugby, football, and Gaelic games.
