Presentation description
This presentation explores the rehabilitation of an elite footballer following surgical repair of a distal hamstring T-junction injury, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis, individualised goal setting and football-centred rehabilitation. Through a detailed case study, Massimo examines how progressive strength, conditioning, running, high-speed exposure, GPS data and player feedback can be integrated to guide return to full team training and competitive play.
Learning objectives
- Develop a structured, football-centred rehabilitation pathway following complex hamstring injury and surgical repair.
- Apply objective testing, running-speed thresholds and athlete feedback to progressively manage rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions.
- Evaluate how clinical data, football-specific exposure and multidisciplinary decision-making can be integrated rather than relying on isolated return-to-play criteria.
About the presenter
Massimo Zanovello is a sports physiotherapist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach in the Performance and Medical Department at FC Lugano, where he works with first-team players on rehabilitation and return-to-play.
He graduated in Physiotherapy from the University of Insubria in 2017 and holds a Master’s in Sports Physiotherapy from the University of Siena. His main interests are muscle injuries and hamstring rehab, and he blends clinical assessment with running exposure, GPS monitoring and strength and power testing to guide players back to sport.
His research includes work on long-standing adductor-related groin pain and a 2025 case report on a football-specific return to play after surgical repair of a hamstring T-junction injury.
