Presentation description
Ruth Waghorn explores how to integrate speed training into an international football environment, sharing her journey from applying sprinter-style training to adapting that work within the constraints and realities of team sports. She explains how early attempts to simply transplant elite sprint protocols failed, and what revised approaches she developed to balance speed work with congestion, fatigue, and team demands.
Learning objectives
- Understand the challenges of implementing sprint-style speed training in team sport settings with constrained time and large squad logistics.
- Identify and compare different strategies for designing speed work that is compatible with match load, recovery, and team training schedules.
- Be able to plan and adapt speed training programs so that they are practical, sustainable, and effective in an international/team-sport setting.
About the presenter
Ruth came through the Speedworks system working with elite sprinters before transitioning into team sports. In this presentation she takes us along the journey of how she tried to crowbar the work her sprinters would do into a international football environment. It didn’t work. However, that led to her redefining how she thinks about speed training in team sports.
