Presentation description
This presentation by Professor Keith Barr examines the molecular and biomechanical mechanisms governing musculoskeletal injury prevention and accelerated return to play, with a primary focus on tendon physiology and connective tissue adaptation. Barr details how the variable mechanical properties of tendons, driven by collagen content, cross-link density, and hydration, can be deliberately manipulated through training modality, and how immobilisation actively induces scar-like degeneration within days. He then presents an evidence-based rehabilitation framework built around low-jerk isometric loading protocols and targeted nutritional supplementation to restore tissue integrity with minimal wear and expedite return to competition.
Learning objectives
- Understand how tendon stiffness is regulated by enzymatic and non-enzymatic cross-linking, collagen content, and hydration, and how training velocity manipulates these properties to influence injury risk
- Recognize that immobilization produces rapid, measurable degradation of musculoskeletal tissue quality and appreciate why early load-based rehabilitation is superior to rest
- Apply low-jerk isometric loading principles, including stress relaxation mechanics, bout duration, and inter-bout timing, alongside leucine-rich protein and hydrolyzed collagen supplementation to optimize tissue regeneration
About the presenter
Professor Keith Barr is a molecular exercise physiologist at the University of California, Davis, whose work centers on identifying the smallest molecular signals that mediate the body’s response to exercise, nutrition, aging, and disease. His lab has produced foundational research on connective tissue mechanics, collagen turnover kinetics, and isometric loading protocols for rehabilitation, supported by organizations including the Brooklyn Nets and Gatorade Sport Sciences. He is also co-founder of Sinuous, a company developing devices to quantify loading during isometric movements in clinical and performance settings.
