Developing rehab running frameworks

Rehab running doesn’t have to be a chaotic puzzle every time. In this presentation, Simon Harries shares a robust yet flexible framework that simplifies the return-to-run process—one that can be adapted more than 400 times a year without compromising individualisation. Through practical logic and real-world clarity, Simon lays out how to establish common structures and common goals across rehab scenarios, using intensity, complexity, and context as the levers to drive smarter decisions and consistent progressions.

This isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ prescription—it’s a guide to customising with purpose. From straight-line submaximal work to reactive, high-intensity multi-directional drills, Simon shows you how to manipulate task variables to scale complexity and intensity in a meaningful way. Case studies on quad and hamstring injuries anchor the framework in reality, while detailed drill progressions, constraint-based designs, and context-driven decision-making equip you to create running progressions that are simple to implement, hard to break, and easy to trust.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how to design a scalable rehab running framework that adapts to intensity, complexity, and context.
  • Learn to manipulate drill variables (space, speed, structure, and cues) to progress athletes logically through return-to-run phases.
  • Apply principles from real-world case examples to individualise running progressions based on physical, technical, and tactical demands.

About the presenter
