Developing gamespeed in basketball

Presentation description

In basketball, an athlete’s speed is in direct proportion to their ability to slam on the brakes, change body position, and re-accelerate in a different direction. This presentation from Molly Binetti will dive into strategies to enhance overall motor learning and skill development, as well as developing components of deceleration and change of direction in the weight room. Within that framework, there will be discussion about assessments, performance testing, and exercise selection.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how to layer perceptual and contextual constraints into speed training specific to basketball.
  • Design progressive drills that integrate reactive decision-making, directional changes, and sprint mechanics.
  • Evaluate and adapt speed interventions to ensure transfer to in-game movement demands.

About the presenter

Molly Binetti is an applied basketball performance specialist who works to bridge the gap between motor learning and competitive speed development in basketball. Her work emphasizes embedding game-relevant constraints, decision-making, and biomechanics into speed training rather than relying solely on generic sprint drills.
