Presentation description
Clubbing all eccentrics together under one banner can lead to confusion about how to perform them and uncertainty around the results they will provide. At its best, knowing the different strategies, why they could be employed and when you should (or shouldn’t!) use them can lead to the development of tremendous levels of strength and muscle. However, at its worst, it can end up being underloaded tempo holds or 90° eccentric-isometric nonsense.
So what are the methods available and how can you use programme them effectively with your athletes?
In this presentation, First Team Athletic Performance Coach at Bristol Bears Rugby, Pete Burridge takes us through how he uses (or doesn’t use) tempo-based eccentrics, supramaximal loaded eccentrics, flywheel loaded eccentrics, manual overloaded eccentrics and accentuated eccentric loading and how you can too.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish between different eccentric‐loading strategies (tempo-based, supramaximal, accentuated, flywheel, etc.), including their benefits, drawbacks, and appropriate applications.
- Identify key decision criteria for when and how to incorporate eccentric training into athlete programmes (e.g. athlete readiness, loading capacity, movement mechanics, risk of injury).
- Design eccentric training protocols that balance load, intensity, recovery, and specificity so as to optimise strength, hypertrophy, and injury prevention.
About the presenter
Pete Burridge is a First Team Athletic Performance Coach at Bristol Bears Rugby. He previously spent time working at Leicester Tigers Rugby Club, Leicester City FC, and at Exeter University.
