Alexi Pianosi

Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club

Alexi is entering his second year as the Head of Strength and Conditioning for the Colorado Avalanche after spending the previous 7 years with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL. He holds a degree in Kinesiology from Queen’s University and a Master’s degree in Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Corrective Exercise from A.T. Still University. His philosophy centers on movement quality and enhancing an athlete’s ability to effectively transfer strength and power from the gym into their movement expression on the ice. Working with professional hockey players for the past 15 years, Alexi believes there is a disconnect when individuals focus on training physical qualities off the ice without reconciling how the movement demands of the sport change the constraints placed on the body when combined with the skillful execution of skating, shooting, and passing. It is through this lens that Alexi views individual programming, exercise selection, the use of technology in hockey, and how strength and conditioning interact with the rise in sports science.
