Garrett Blakey is a high-performance sport scientist and strength and conditioning coach working in elite basketball. He currently serves as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Salt Lake City Stars (NBA G League) and as Head Strength Coach for Canada Basketball’s Senior Men’s National Team. In these roles, he operates within an integrated performance environment, leading the design and implementation of evidence-informed training programs to optimize athlete health, readiness, and performance across demanding competitive schedules. Blakey holds a Master’s degree in Kinesiology and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC). He is currently completing his PhD in Kinesiology at Ontario Tech University, where his research focuses on talent identification and decision-making in sport. His doctoral work explores how coaches evaluate athletes, with particular emphasis on gaze behavior, perceptual-cognitive expertise, and the language used to describe performance. Across both applied and research settings, Blakey integrates performance data, athlete monitoring, and sport science principles to inform decision-making and support long-term athlete development. His work bridges the gap between research and practice, with a focus on creating actionable insights for coaches and performance staff. Blakey has extensive experience working with national team and professional athletes and is a member of Canada Basketball’s Integrated Support Team. He continues to contribute to the field through applied practice, research, and knowledge translation aimed at advancing performance in high-performance sport.
