Presentation description
Some research indicates a high correlation between maximal strength relative to body mass in lower body strength training movements and sprinting performance and some coaches believe that the stronger an athlete, the faster their times in short sprints will be. In that line of thinking Olympic weightlifting and the different power lifting movements has for a long time been very popular in many sports including the athletics.
Other coaches are rising concern about too much heavy lifting might lead to unwanted increase of body mass and a gradual diminishing return in terms of transfer of maximal strength capacity to sprinting ability, some are arguing for more “specific” training-methods like plyometrics that is probably one of athletics oldest strength training methods for speed development and/or resisted sprinting that is gaining popularity especially with new technology. Håkan Andersson will in 45 minutes share some of his 45 years of experience and thoughts about strength training for speed development.
Learning objectives
- Interpret how different resisted and assisted loads influence sprint kinematics (step length, frequency, contact/flight time) and when to use each.
- Design individualised resisted vs. assisted sprint prescriptions using force–velocity profiling and velocity decrement targets.
- Integrate heavy resistance, resisted sprinting, and assisted overspeed modalities into a coherent periodised sprint development strategy.
About the presenter
Håkan Andersson is a performance coach and researcher focused on the intersection of sprint mechanics and training interventions in elite athletes. He navigates the complexities of resisted and assisted sprinting, translating evidence into practice to help coaches push athletes beyond current mechanical ceilings. His presentations clarify how to employ heavy strength and overspeed methods safely and effectively in high-performance settings.
