Run-specific isometric strength training – A tool in the toolbox of running based athletes

Presentation description

Over the last 5-10 years, isometric strength training has had a huge resurgence. Alex Natera has been at the forefront of this resurgence and is the leading expert when it comes to run-specific isometric strength training (RSIST). In this presentation, Alex goes over the theory as to why run-specific isometric strength training is a great tool to have in your coaching toolbox when it comes to speed development. He then takes us through ways to assess and finally programme run-specific isometric strength training with athletes.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the theoretical rationale for run-specific isometric strength training (RSIST), including how it can contribute to speed development and injury resilience in running-based athletes.
  • Assess and identify appropriate angles, loads, and execution criteria in run-specific isometric testing to inform program design.
  • Design and program RSIST protocols (selection, progression, frequency) integrated into broader running and speed training plans.

About the presenter

Alex Natera has been a Strength and Conditioning coach in elite sport for the past 22 years. Over this time Alex has held a number of positions across a range of professional football codes and Olympic sports within national sporting institute systems in Europe, the Middle East and Australia. Alex Natera is a leading practitioner in the resurgence of isometric strength training, particularly in relation to running. He outlines both theory and application of run-specific isometric strength training: why it matters, how to assess athletes, and how to structure and integrate RSIST into athlete programmes to enhance speed and robustness in running-based athletes.
