In-season management strategies for patellar tendinopathy

Presentation description

This presentation outlines evidence-based strategies to manage patellar tendinopathy during the competitive season, enabling athletes to continue participation while minimising pain and risk, by delving into understanding the structure and function of tendons, exploring why tendinopathy develops, and offering practical solutions for planning microcycles and prescribing exercises. It covers non-invasive interventions like isometrics, eccentric and heavy slow resistance training, load-modification, and adjunctive measures for short-term symptom relief.

Learning objectives

  • Recognise and apply in-season resistance training modalities (eccentric, heavy slow resistance, isometric) that reduce pain and improve function while maintaining sport participation.
  • Implement load management strategies, including daily pain monitoring and activity modification, to balance tendon stress and recovery across practice, competition, and training days.
  • Identify adjunctive tools (e.g. patellar strapping/taping) and spacing of intervention parameters, and understand when sport withdrawal is or isn’t warranted.
