Presentation description
The search for the enhancement of linear speed has grown exponentially over the last few years. Elite coaches from track and field have influenced what many in team sports do, which isn’t a bad thing. Those at the elite end coach the fastest people on the planet. But do those practices translate straight to team sport athletes or is there something else that is needed to bridge that gap?
In this presentation, Alan Murdoch details the frameworks, the progressions and regressions he uses with his athletes to ensure that the work he does on speed development transfers to the field and court. He takes us through his game speed model using examples of his time coaching Leicester Tigers and England international rugby player, Anthony Watson as well as others.
After watching this presentation you will have a firm idea how to develop a training philosophy that drives the development of athlete “hardware” and “software”, how to create Game Speed drills, implement Alan’s long term Game Speed framework and how to profile your athletes.
Learning objectives
- Differentiate linear speed from “game speed” in understanding why traditional sprint training may not fully transfer to sport-specific performance.
- Apply frameworks for speed transfer by learning progressions and regressions that bridge the gap between isolated speed training and in-game application.
- Integrate athlete profiling with Game Speed drills: Tailor drills to individual needs for optimal speed transfer into performance.
About the presenter
Alan Murdoch, an experienced high-performance coach with a background in rugby (including work with Leicester Tigers and England players), presents a systematic framework for ensuring that speed training truly transfers to match play. His approach emphasizes developing both physical “hardware” (linear speed) and contextual “software” (decision-making, timing, and tactical awareness), supported by athlete profiling and targeted Game Speed drills.
