Deceleration: The most overlooked aspect of athletic movement speed

Presentation description

Deceleration is THE most overlooked aspect of athletic movement speed. We all know about the extensive research that has gone into acceleration and its affect on performance. But what about deceleration? We have great knowledge on how to enhance acceleration and top speed, but not how to slow athletes down!

In this presentation, Damian outlines why deceleration is so vital to team sport athletes, how we can test it accurately and reliably, and how we can use his Braking Framework to train it both on and off the field.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the why role of deceleration in athletic performance is important not just for speed and agility, but also for reducing injury risk during high-intensity movements.
  • Learn key methods for measuring and training deceleration by identify practical and accessible ways to assess deceleration—such as field-based drills or wearable tech.
  • Apply effective strategies to enhance deceleration mechanics by gaining insight into structured approaches—like eccentric strength work and sport-specific braking exercises—that can be implemented in training programs.

About the presenter

Damian Harper is a lecturer in Coaching and Human Performance at the University of Central Lancashire and the founder of Human Braking Performance. He is an accredited sport and exercise scientist (BASES) and strength & conditioning coach (UKSCA), best known for his PhD research on the neuromuscular foundations of deceleration in team sports and for developing the Braking Strength Framework used within elite performance environments.
